From Student to Staff: Aaliyah’s Journey into Automotive

03 November 2026

Former Automotive student Aaliyah French has returned to Chesterfield College as an Automotive Technician, supporting learners in the same workshops where she once developed her own skills.

After studying at the college and building her knowledge of the automotive industry, Aaliyah has come full circle, progressing from learner to staff member and helping students prepare for careers in the sector.

Working within the Automotive department, Aaliyah supports practical lessons, maintains workshop equipment and helps create the industry-standard learning environment that gives students valuable hands-on experience.

Having recently been in the learners’ shoes herself, Aaliyah understands the challenges and opportunities that come with studying for a career in the automotive industry.

Speaking about her journey, Aaliyah said:

“When I started at college, I knew I wanted to work in the automotive industry, but I never imagined I’d return as a member of staff. The support I received helped me grow in confidence, develop my skills and realise what I was capable of achieving. My industry placements throughout the duration of my studies really helped me too; I feel I got that real-life experience that I needed.”

Now part of the Automotive team, Aaliyah is helping to support the next generation of technicians as they begin their own career journeys.

She added: “It’s incredibly rewarding to work with students who are following a similar path to the one I took. I enjoy sharing what I’ve learned and helping them build the confidence and skills they’ll need for the future.”

Aaliyah’s progression highlights the opportunities available to learners beyond the classroom, with many students progressing into apprenticeships, employment and further study after completing their courses.

As demand for skilled technicians continues across the automotive sector, developing local talent remains an important part of ensuring the industry has the workforce it needs for the future.

Dale Spragg, Vocational Lead for Automotive, said: “Seeing Aaliyah progress from student to Automotive Technician has been a real success story for the department. She is a great role model for our current learners, showing what can be achieved with dedication and the right support. We’re delighted to have her as part of the team and know she’ll be a valuable source of inspiration for future automotive professionals.”

Reflecting on her achievements, Aaliyah said: “I’m really grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given. Being able to come back and work alongside some of the team that supported me during my studies is something I’m really proud of.”

Stories like Aaliyah’s showcase the positive impact of practical learning, industry-focused training and dedicated staff who help students achieve their ambitions.

From learner to technician, Aaliyah’s journey is a fantastic example of how dedication, hands-on experience and the right support can help young people build successful careers.
