Corey the college DJ
21 November 2022Corey Chapman, a Level 2 Music student spoke to us about his growing love for music and how his passion for the subject has blossomed into him gaining work experience as The Chesterfield College Resident DJ. “Music has always been a big part of my life. Growing up, I was always doing karaoke and listening to music. My Uncle and Mum have always introduced me to their music too. Over the years I found my own taste and eventually created my own music.”
Starting from the bottom and making my way to the top.
“I chose Chesterfield as it’s close to home and it’s a good environment. We were the first year to have a recording studio, it intrigued me and I couldn’t wait to use it. I wanted to start on level 1, even though I could’ve started on level 2 with the grades I got. When I look at businesses, people start from the bottom and work their way up, they don’t start in the middle and try and figure it out. I wanted to do it properly and build up my skills from the bottom.”
Discovering DJ’ing.
“You’re able to express yourself here and you’re free to explore. I love working on vocals, acoustic guitar and DJ’ing the most. I came to college to learn how to make and produce my own music but DJ’ing was never at the forefront. The college had an open evening event and our group was asked to come and put some music on. Ever since then, I’ve kept doing it. It’s now something I am looking at progressing. After my course, I hope to go to university or straight into work within the industry to build up my work experience.”
I am spoken to like an adult.
“What stood out to me here is you are treated like an adult. You can explore as much as you want, as long as you get your work done. It’s 50/50 practical and course work but you still have freedom within the split.” Corey DJ’d the kindness festival all last week for our LEAP Mentors event. Having music in the Heartspace creates a more welcoming atmosphere in the college and it’s lovely to see students and staff singing along as they walk through the space. Thanks Corey!
