What to bring to your interview

  • Formal identification
  • Previous maths/English qualifications (if possible)
  • Notepad and pen

What to expect in your interview

You will complete a short, computer-based assessment to discover your current working level. This should take approximately 30 minutes to complete and will give the tutors a good idea of your strengths and areas you need to work on. There is no need to worry about this assessment; it is not a test, and the results are used by your tutor to best help you improve your maths/English skills.

Once you have completed the assessment, the tutor will discuss with you what the results of the assessment show and what class options would be best for you.

Functional Skills or GCSE?

At Chesterfield College, we offer classes for both Functional Skills and GCSE.

Functional Skills are practical English and Maths qualifications that give you the essential skills for life, work and further learning. They focus on applying your knowledge to real-life situations, such as budgeting or reading an article for key information. At Chesterfield College, we offer Functional Skills Maths and English from Entry Level 2 to Level 2.

GCSE Maths provides a foundation in mathematical reasoning and practical applications and covers skills such as number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, probability and statistics. At Chesterfield College, we offer Foundation Tier which means you can get a grade 1 to 5, where grade 4 is equivalent to a passing grade (or grade C).

GCSE English Language will give you the skills to read and write effectively, analyse language and develop your communication skills. GCSE English Language covers grades 1 to 9, where grade 4 is equivalent to a passing grade (or grade C).

You will be offered Functional Skills or GCSE based on your working level and any prior attainment. If you know that you need maths/English for progression onto another course, it is useful to know if Functional Skills can be accepted as an equivalent to GCSE.

Functional Skills Level 2 is equivalent to a grade 4/C at GCSE, whereas Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to a grade 3/D at GCSE. The Entry Level Functional Skills sit below this.

At interview, you will complete the Functional Skills initial assessment as this covers a larger range of key skills compared to the GCSE version.

What happens after my interview?

After the interview, you will be offered a conditional place on the course(s). You will also receive emails from the adult Maths and English email (adultME@chesterfield.ac.uk) with activities and information.
