Turn your passion for games into a career with our HNC in Game Development. This course gives you a strong foundation in creative and technical skills, combining theory with hands-on practice. You’ll learn:

Assignments

A1: Concept and Development Explore the history and cultural context of video games, then generate and refine an original game concept using industry-standard ideation techniques. You’ll create concept art, develop 3D models, and maintain a detailed Game Design Document (GDD). Finally, design a tutorial level and a playable main level in Unreal Engine 5.

A2: Creative Project Plan and develop a functional game prototype using Unreal Engine 5. Document your process in a development log, conduct iterative testing, and complete professional practice tasks including a skills audit, career development plan, and a research-based case study. The project concludes with a recorded pitch presentation and a critical evaluation of your work.

Entry Requirements

  • A relevant Level 3 qualification such as Computing, Creative Media, Art and Design.
  • A portfolio of creative media work such as game ideas, concept art, game design and development, 3D modelling, 2D animation, etc.
  • English and maths (grade C/4 or above at GCSE or Level 2 equivalent.
  • Mature students with relevant experience are welcome.

Practical assessments and two major assignments.

Progression

You could choose to study an extra year to ‘top-up’ your qualification to a full honours degree at a university after completion of the HND. You could also start your career in the games industry.
