If you enjoy practical, hands-on learning and want to understand how mechanical and electrical systems work together, this is the course for you. You will learn the core basics of both mechanical engineering and electrical/electronic systems.

You will have access to specialist workshops where you will work with mechanical components, electrical circuits, control systems and automation equipment, developing the skills to build, test and fault-find engineering systems.

You will be learning from industry-experienced tutors with strong knowledge and understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering. Throughout the course, there are a range of opportunities to help you take your first steps into industry, whether through work experience, industry placements or apprenticeships. Tutors and careers specialists will support you in preparing for your next steps and future career.

Additional information: PPE is required in the form of workshop overalls and steel toe-capped boots. We work with PPE suppliers and can support you in getting fully equipped at the start of your course if needed. Bursaries may be available to help cover the cost of essential equipment.

Course Structure

The Level 3 Mechanical & Electrical (Mechatronic) course develops your practical skills and technical knowledge, preparing you for careers in modern engineering and automation.

You will gain hands-on experience working with mechanical systems, electrical circuits, control systems and automation technologies, including the following units:

  • QET3/001 – Engineering & Environmental Health & Safety (Mandatory)
  • QET3/003 – Engineering Mathematics
  • QET3/030 – General Engineering Maintenance Techniques
  • QET3/049 – Advanced Manufacturing Techniques
  • QET3/009 – Electrical & Electronic Principles (Group A 1/1)

Assessment is based on practical and technical work, graded at Pass, Merit or Distinction.

This course is ideal for learners looking to progress into maintenance, manufacturing, robotics, automation, apprenticeships or further technical study.

Entry Requirements

You must have an interest in engineering. You must be willing to learn and develop yourself. Grade 4 in English, Grade 5 in maths & Grade 5 in sciences. Have a level 2 Engineering Qualification from college or school.

Free for Eligible 16-18 year olds otherwise Adult Learner Loans available, costs apply.

Progression

There are a few options you can consider after finishing your course: Progress onto an extended diploma where you can study further at level 3 and gain additional UCAS points. Gain an apprenticeship. HNC – Mechanical or Manufacturing (depending on UCAS points achieved). Employment.
