This course is designed to enable progression to HE for those without the necessary A Levels or equivalent qualifications, or who have been out of education for a while. It will prepare you for academic challenges as an HE student and enhance employment opportunities.

Our current provision leads to university and further into professions within Healthcare and the NHS.

Health Professions Pathway – recommended for applicants intending to progress onto Adult Nursing, Child Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Sciences, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Radiotherapy, as well as other healthcare professions.

Course Structure

  • 1 year course – 8 hours per week (in college) usually split over 2 days with 4hrs independent work to be completed outside of college.
  • You will have to dedicate another 10-14 hours per week to independent study and assignment work
  • Assessed through assignments, presentations, practical experiments, written exams.
  • You can have an option to study GCSE Maths or Functional Skills L2 Maths alongside Access Level 3 course.
  • You will need to do a math screening test to establish appropriate Maths course.
  • You cannot study GCSE English Language alongside Level 3 Access. If you do not have GCSE English, you will need to complete it first before progressing onto Access Level 3. You will need to have an English screening test before enrolling onto GCSE English course.

Course comprises 60 credits:

45 = graded – Pass, Merit or Distinction;

15 = ungraded.

  • Human Biology (30 credits) – covers the main body systems, including Reproduction and Genetics Unit.
  • Psychology
  • Health Studies
  • Study Skills, including Professional Behaviours: Nursing and Health Professions
  • Numeracy in a Health Context

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE English Language grade C/4 – non-negotiable
  • GCSE Maths grade C/4 (Potentially accept L2 Functional Skills – this will depend on the University course you are planning to apply for)

Progression

The aim of this qualification is to prepare students for progression into higher education subjects including, but not limited to, Health and Social Care, Social Work, Nursing and Occupational Health. Please note: students are strongly advised to contact universities prior to commencing this Access to HE Diploma to check the university’s specific entry criteria. The award of a Diploma does not provide guaranteed entry to UK higher education programmes – each university has its own criteria for entry.
