Course Structure

This hands‑on course develops the core skills needed for fabrication and welding. You’ll learn how to work safely and professionally in a fabrication environment while building practical welding and fabrication experience.

    You’ll cover:
  • Health and safety in fabrication and welding
  • Welding processes including Manual Metal Arc (MMA) and Metal Active Gas Shielded (MAGS)
  • Sheet metal and plate fabrication techniques
  • Engineering drawings
  • You’ll produce two flat‑position welds using industry‑standard welding processes. These welds will be visually and destructively tested, helping you understand exactly what makes a high‑quality weld.
Fabrication tasks focus on sheet metal (3mm and below), using engineering drawings, with projects increasing in complexity as you progress. All practical work is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction, allowing you to showcase your developing skills.

If you haven’t yet achieved a grade 4 or above in GCSE English or Maths, you’ll retake these alongside your vocational course. This is fully built into your three‑day college timetable, so you can strengthen these essential skills without added pressure.

You’ll also take part in our EMPOWER programme, designed to support your success beyond the workshop. These sessions help you build confidence in your learning, develop strong digital skills, improve wellbeing and resilience, and boost your job prospects, citizenship and social skills.
