Are you interested in teaching in Further Education or Sixth Form colleges? Gain the qualification you need to teach in the area of Post-16 and Further Education.

This course is for anyone who is new to teaching, or who is already working as a teacher and wants to become qualified.

Validated by Sheffield Hallam University, you would become a student of the university and Chesterfield College and benefit from lecturers possessing a breadth and depth of knowledge of experiences in post-16 teaching and learning.

The course is taught 100% at Chesterfield College. As a student of both institutes you will benefit from access to both libraries and online resources. You will also receive support on your QTLS (Qualified Teaching and Learning Status) application, which provides you with the equivalent of Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to then teach secondary school students.

Course Structure

Year 1

  • Introduction to professional practice in FES (Further Education & Skills) (30 credits)
  • Developing reflective practice in FES (Further Education & Skills) (30 credits)

Year 2

  • Examining and developing pedagogy and practice in FES (Further Education & Skills) (30 credits)
  • Reviewing and investigating pedagogy and practice in FES (Further Education & Skills) (30 credits)

Entry Requirements

  • Level 3 qualification in subject specialism
  • GCSE English Language minimum grade 4. Where applicants have achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in English Literature only, we will look for further evidence of a breadth of achievement in English (this will be discussed during your interview). We will consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining the relevant GCSEs.
  • Where GCSEs are not held, L2 Functional Skills English & maths are accepted. The English qualification must include reading and writing, not just speaking and listening.
  • Teachers of SEND must hold a level 3 SEND qualification.
  • In-service applicants must provide evidence that they already work as a teacher or tutor, will teach a minimum of 75 hours in each year of the course, at least 50 of which must be in their teaching subject, and that their employer will provide a specialist mentor to support them.
  • Pre-service applicants are responsible for securing their own teaching placement, with a minimum of 75 hours in each year, at least 50 hours of which must be in their teaching subject, and a specialist mentor to support (this would be discussed during your interview).
  • If English is not your first language you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills.

Assessment methods

Assessment of practical teaching – you will complete a minimum of 150 hours of teaching over the two-year programme. During the course your teaching will be observed a total of ten times. Your university tutor will carry out a joint observation with your mentor for four of these observations. You will also be assessed via: Presentations, Planning and evaluation exercises, Preparation of teaching materials, Written assignments, professional discussions and a portfolio of evidence.
