Are you interested in teaching in Further Education or Sixth Form colleges? Gain the qualification you need to teach in the area of Post-16 and Further Education.

This course is for anyone who is new to teaching, or who is already working as a teacher and wants to become qualified.

Validated by Sheffield Hallam University, you would become a student of the university and Chesterfield College and benefit from lecturers possessing a breadth and depth of knowledge of experiences in post-16 teaching and learning.

The course is taught 100% at Chesterfield College. As a student of both institutes you will benefit from access to both libraries and online resources. You will also receive support on your QTLS (Qualified Teaching and Learning Status) application, which provides you with the equivalent of Qualified Teacher Status, enabling you to then teach secondary school students.

  • Entry Requirements

    • Honours Degree with minimum 2:2 classification
    • GCSE English Language minimum grade 4. Where applicants have achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in English Literature only we will look for further evidence of a breadth of achievement in English (this would be discussed during your interview). We will consider applicants who are in the process of obtaining the relevant GCSEs
    • Where GCSEs are not held, L2 Functional Skills English & Maths are accepted. The full English course must be held, including reading and writing, not just speaking and listening)
    • Where no formal qualifications in English and Maths are held, applicants can complete an equivalency test (this would be discussed at interview).
    • In-service applicants must provide evidence that they already work as a teacher or tutor, will teach a minimum of 60 hours in each year of the course, and that their employer will provide a specialist mentor to support them
    • Pre-service applicants are responsible for securing their own teaching placement, with a minimum of 60 hours in each year, and a specialist mentor to support (this would be discussed during your interview)
    • If English is not your first language you must have an IELTS score of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in all skills

    Assessment methods

    Assessment of practical teaching – you will complete a minimum of 120 hours of teaching over the two year programme, During the course your teaching will be observed eight times by your placement mentor. Your university tutor will carry out a joint observation with your mentor for four of these observations, You will also be assessed via: Presentations, Planning and evaluation exercises, Preparation of teaching materials, Written assignments.
