Studying GCSE Maths or Functional Skills Maths as an adult can open doors to new opportunities, boost confidence, and make everyday life easier. Whether you’re looking to progress in your career, access further education, improve your money management, or support your children with homework, gaining a recognised maths qualification can make a real difference. Both GCSE and Functional Skills offer valuable benefits—one more academic, the other more practical—helping you build essential skills that enhance your work, home life, and future prospects.

We offer both Functional Skills and GCSE Maths, and we will determine which course is best for you at interview.

Course Structure

A broad overview of the course involves three main topics:

  • Number e.g. types of number, fractions, decimals and percentages, ratio
  • Measure shape and space e.g. units of measure, perimeter, area and volume, angles
  • Data handling e.g. charts, graphs, averages

To pass the qualification, you will complete a non-calculator and a calculator paper.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course, but you will be required to sit a short assessment at interview to assess your level.

Assessment methods

Written examination. For Functional Skills, we use City and Guilds as our exam board. For GCSE Maths, we offer the Foundation Tier with Eduqas as our exam board.

Progression

You may progress within Functional Skills or onto GCSE Maths. It may also be possible to progress onto other college courses or use your qualification to gain employment.
