Studying GCSE English Language or Functional Skills English as an adult can unlock new opportunities, strengthen communication skills, and build everyday confidence. Whether you want to progress in your career, move into further education, improve your writing and speaking skills, or support your children with their learning, gaining a recognised English qualification can make a real impact. Both GCSE and Functional Skills offer valuable benefits—one more academic, the other more practical—helping you develop essential skills that enhance your work, home life, and future prospects.

We offer both Functional Skills English and GCSE English Language, and we will determine which course is best for you at interview.

Course Structure

A broad overview of the course involves three main topics:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Speaking, Listening and Communication

To achieve Functional Skills, you will need to complete a reading paper, a writing paper and an in-class speaking and listening assessment.

To achieve GCSE English Language, you will sit two papers: Non-Fiction and Contemporary Texts.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course, but you will be required to sit a short assessment at interview to assess your level.

Assessment methods

Written examination. For Functional Skills, we use City and Guilds as our exam board. For GCSE English, we use the Pearson 2.0 specification.

Progression

You may progress within Functional Skills or onto GCSE English. It may also be possible to progress onto other college courses or use your qualification to gain employment.
