Volodymyr Proshkin speaks to us about his experience on the ESOL course

20 February 2023
Volodymyr Proshkin, one of the ESOL students has been in contact with us about his time at Chesterfield College. We are so happy to hear about his positive experience and to find out about how it’s allowed him to improve his English to get to where he is today.
Our ESOL course (English as a second or other language) is for those who want to improve their English speaking, writing and listening skills. We offer beginner’s courses and also more advanced courses, dependent on your ability. There are no entry requirements for this course, we simply ask you to do an English test so we can find out which of the 3 levels will suit you most.

How did you find out about the course?

“I came to England under a special “House for Ukraine” program. Before, I had no experience living in an English-speaking environment. I realised that I lacked practice in speaking and listening. At a meeting of Ukrainians in the church, I learned about the opportunity to study at Chesterfield College. I applied, passed the test and started my studies in September 2022.”

How was your experience on the course?

“The course is very useful, especially for those students who have hearing problems. In my case, it was easier for me to talk than to listen. Therefore, lessons with native teachers were very useful.”

How were the tutors?

“I had a wonderful teacher – Caroline. She is very intelligent, professional, friendly and student-centred. It was felt that in every lesson, she tried to create a special emotional atmosphere that promoted learning. I felt the friendly support of the employees of our Department. Everyone was polite and open to communication.
I recommend using all the advice from the teachers!”

What are you doing now?

“I am currently working as an Academic visitor at the Department of Mathematics Education (Loughborough University)”
