Cadetships

As part of our Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care and the Level 3 foundation in Health and Social Care students will have the opportunity to apply for a Cadetship.

A Cadetship allows students to gain essential work experience and knowledge that will benefit them on their career progression path. It allows students to experience what it’s like working in a medical environment with health care professionals and patients.

What’s a Cadetship?

The Cadetship involves supporting and shadowing health care professionals in an area of the hospital that you wish to explore further as part of your studies.

How does the application process work?

Students can register their interests from the start of the year. Applications are then given to the students who have shown interest in the programme in October.

December is when the recruitment process starts. Students will be invited to do some group activities around the position and for interviews with the staff members at the hospital.

The successful students will undertake a week of training in January before starting their Cadetship. They will then work 1 day a week for around 4 months in their chosen area of the hospital.

In April, they’ll be another intake of students given the opportunity to complete a Cadetship at the hospital.

What areas of the hospital can I work in?

As part of the application process, you can put down the areas or modules that you have been particularly interested in and want to gain further knowledge and experience in as part of your career progression. The hospital will then choose an area that best suits your preferences for you to work in throughout your work experience.

In the past, we have had students work in imagery, mental health, dementia and midwifery.

Do any other colleges provide this experience?

No, this programme is exclusive to Chesterfield College Group in partnership with the Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

Is it exclusive to Level 3 Health and Social Care students?

For those who are studying Health and Social Care, yes, they must be Level 3 students. We also open the opportunity up to those studying Sport and are interested in learning about sports injuries and recovery.

Where will I be undertaking my work experience?

The Cadetship programme is run by Chesterfield Royal Hospital as part of the course. There are limited places but those who are successful will gain valuable high-quality work experience one day a week for 4 months with the NHS. The successful applicants will be trained and supported throughout the programme as well as building up a wealth of highly sought after experience.

Past success story…

Hannah Birks did a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care. As part of her course, she was given the chance to do an NHS Cadetship. She tells us how this experience has helped her to get a place on a midwifery course at university.
