Prevent – Radicalisation, Extremism and Terrorism

Prevent is part of safeguarding in colleges, designed to protect young people from extremism and radicalisation. It focuses on education, early support, and keeping students safe, not punishing them for their views.

As young people in further education gain independence – especially online – they may encounter harmful content or individuals trying to influence them. Colleges have trained staff who look out for early warning signs and offer supportive help when needed.

Government Prevent Strategy

How parents can support:

  • Talk openly about online activity and world events
  • Stay calm and curious if worrying views come up
  • Encourage critical thinking
  • Contact the college’s safeguarding team if concerned

Prevent is about working together to create a safe environment where young people can explore ideas confidently and safely.

Prevent is not about criminalising an individual, it is about safeguarding them.

If you, or someone you know is at risk in this way you can contact the Safeguarding Team at Chesterfield college on 01246 500688 or email ccsafe@chesterfield.ac.uk

Call the Police on 101 or 999 in an emergency
