Travel and Tourism

Studying travel and tourism at Chesterfield College opens up an exciting variety of careers from cabin crew and travel agent, to events planner and cruise line manager. All of our courses have been designed to help you develop the skills that employers will be looking for, giving you the best chance in your career after college.

Travel and Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries. Many countries are largely driven by their tourism trade. There will always be a demand for jobs within the industry.

On the course, you will learn about the transport sector, accommodation sector, hospitality and visitor attractions.

A key element of tourism is keeping tourists happy, occupied and equipped. This is why we focus heavily on customer service and developing your knowledge and practical experience.

You will also study marketing and promotion, airports and airlines and other specialism roles in the industry including resort and holiday representatives.

Every year our travel and tourism students have the opportunity to visit different companies and listen to guest lecturers from the industry, giving them a taste of how leading venues and organisations work.

“I’m really enjoying it. It’s really interesting and very practical. Recently, we’ve been doing a lot of theory work but that’s because we’re setting up for the more practical activities coming up in the future.

At the minute, we’re focusing on the role of cabin crew. We’ve studied the theory behind what cabin crew need to know, but now we’re moving on to practical learning. For example, we’re going to be learning how to give a safety demonstration. After cabin crew, we’re going to learn about resort reps.

We’ve also started doing a bit about UK travel and tourism and the cruise industry.”

Our Travel and Tourism students took members of the congregation from the Holy Trinity Church on tours around the town of Chesterfield as part of their work experience.

This project allowed them to practice researching, tour planning, marketing and designing. It was also a great opportunity for them to practice public speaking to increase their confidence when speaking to members of the public.

Jonah Slater, travel and tourism student in a travel classroom

Jonah Slater…

“When I first started my level 2 course here at college, I was mainly just thinking about a career in travel and tourism. I didn’t have a specific goal in mind. We did one trip to Liverpool John Lennon Airport which gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how everything worked. I think it was that trip that really solidified in my mind that a career in aviation was what I wanted to aim for.

During my first year on the level 2 course I really got a feel for everything in the travel and tourism industry. It gave us a good general background.

The level 3 has given me a greater in-depth understanding and a good grounding because although my main focus is working in an airport I have a wider perspective on the travel and tourism industry. We’ve done lots of units on a wide range of topics, on travel agencies and tourism boards and theme parks for example.”
