If you enjoy practical, hands-on learning, this Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Engineering and Technology (Fabrication and Welding) is the ideal progression from Level 2.

You will develop advanced fabrication and welding skills in a well-equipped workshop, learning industry-standard techniques and safe working practices. Taught by experienced industry professionals, the course prepares you for employment, apprenticeships, or further study, with support from tutors and careers staff throughout.

Additional information: PPE is required (flame-retardant overalls and steel toe-capped boots). Support and bursaries may be available to help with costs.

Course Structure

This Level 3 Welding course is designed to develop your advanced practical skills and technical understanding, preparing you for progression within the engineering and fabrication industries.

Throughout the programme, you will study a range of industry-relevant modules, including:

  • Engineering and Environmental Health & Safety
  • Pattern Development
  • Metal Inert Gas (MIG) and Metal Active Gas (MAG) Welding
  • Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding
  • Producing Plate Fabrications

The course places strong emphasis on practical competence. You will be required to produce a variety of welds to a specified standard, working accurately to given specifications and industry expectations.
Fabrication work covers both platework (3mm and above) and sheet metal (3mm and below). You will work from detailed engineering drawings, with the complexity of tasks increasing as your skills and confidence develop throughout the course.

Assessment of practical work is graded as Pass, Merit, or Distinction, rewarding both technical accuracy and overall quality of workmanship.

This course is ideal for learners looking to enhance their welding expertise, improve employability, and progress into skilled roles within fabrication, manufacturing, or further technical training.

Entry Requirements

Must have a L2 qualification in Fabrication and Welding. Must have a grade 4 in GCSE English and a grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics. This course combines advanced practical skills with rigorous theoretical assessments, demanding full focus and commitment. Students are expected to complete homework and engage in independent research to support the core curriculum. Strict deadlines and frequent assessments are integral to every unit.

Progression

Successful completion of the Level 3 course and remaining GCSE will gve you the opourtunity to progress into either Level 3 Extended Diploma in Fabrication and welding or an extended diploma in engineering technologies.
