This course is designed for students who wish to enter Higher Education in Engineering and become technically qualified at level 4. The Higher National Certificate, which is a Higher Technical Qualifications, is used as the technical qualification for Higher Apprenticeships.

Applicants are those interested in pursuing career development into technical, supervisory and management roles within the engineering industry, or possibly use as an entry qualification for university.

Course Structure

Electrical and Electronic Engineering for England pathway – HVGB4. This is the latest Higher Technical Qualification and “quality marked” by the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Qualification (IfATE)

The part time programme is scheduled to cover 4 units per year, each unit is worth 15 credits. 120 credits are required for the HNC. The 120 HNC credits are required as a pre-requisite for the HND which is a further 120 credits at level 5, the HND therefore requiring 240 credits in total. Full time programmes are delivered over one college year.

  • Unit 4001 – Engineering Design
  • Unit 4002 – Engineering Mathematics
  • Unit 4004 – Managing a Professional Engineering Project

The remaining 5 “specialist” units are:

  • Unit 4014 – Production Engineering for Manufacture
  • Unit 4015 – Automation, Robotics and Programmable Logic Controllers (plc’s)
  • Unit 4017 – Quality and Process Improvement
  • Unit 4019 – Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Unit 4021 – Electrical Machines

Entry Requirements

Students who have completed level 3 Engineering qualifications and wish to progress will be interviewed prior to entry as the level 4 programme has a high level of maths and science content. External and mature applicants will also be interviewed to assess their maths and science capabilities although other qualifications such as A levels in maths and science are ideal.
