This course is a one-year, full-time course covering the fundamentals of sport and exercise science which on completion can lead to a second year to complete the full Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science. The one-year course at Level 3 is equivalent to 1.5 A Levels, whereas the completion of the two-year course is equivalent to 3 A Levels. During the first year of this course you will undertake study in six units. Four of the units will be assessed through coursework and two of the units with be assessed through external examinations. During the programme you will undertake a minimum of 30 hours of work experience in an area linked to your career aspiration and your tutors will support you in finding a suitable placement. The course will run 3-4 days each week.

Employment in the North East region in the sports science sector is predicted to expand by 2.2%. Growth in vacancies is expected in Physiotherapy, Sports therapy and teaching over the next three years.

Course Structure

This course will develop your knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology and how they link to movement and health. You will also develop a greater awareness of psychology and how it applies to coaching performance. Some of this programme will also take into account some of the sociocultural issues that are evident in sports and exercise to give you a broader understanding of sports science.

The course involves a mixture of theory and practical elements. Where possible, the theory elements are always supported with practical lessons.

Units planned for this course

Six modules are studied – four modules are internally assessed and two modules are externally assessed through examinations:

  • Anatomy explores how the anatomy of the cardiovascular, respiratory, skeletal and muscular systems function to produce movements in sport and exercise. (This is assessed through an external examination).
  • Psychology makes you understand the major psychological factors that can affect performers in sports and exercise environments. (This is assessed through an external examination).
  • Coaching develops your knowledge and ability to plan, deliver and evaluate coaching sessions.
  • Fitness Training allows you to study specialised fitness training techniques, and the physical demands of sports, to plan training programmes to help improve sports performance.
  • Research Methods teaches the importance of research, factors affecting the quality of research and the different research methods used in sport.
  • Sociocultural Issues consider the value of sport and exercise in our society and the historical, social, cultural and ethical factors that impact its development.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE’s grades at a level 4 or above which must include Maths and English (and ideally science) or a related level 2 qualification graded at merit or above.

Assessment methods

During this course you will undertake study in six units. Four of the units will be assessed through coursework that will include for example, written reports, presentations, practical assessments, newspaper articles, verbal discussions/podcasts.
The final two units will be assessed through a external examination set by Pearson.

Free For Eligible 16-18 year olds and First Full L3 for 19-23 year olds. Adult Learner Loans available, course costs apply.

Progression

On completion of the first year of the course you will be able to progress onto the National Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science or a higher level apprenticeship.
