13 weeks, one evening a week on a Thursday for three hours 5pm-8pm
Starting week commencing 21/11/24.

This is a qualification that enables you to develop basic hand-skills in various construction trades to develop either DIY skills or before progressing on to study construction in more detail. All the units develop your practical skills and enable you to demonstrate your ability to complete common tasks. You will learn tasks such as painting an area by brush and roller, building a one brick thick wall and understanding health and safety within the construction industry.

This qualification prepares you to progress into further learning and training in construction. You may wish to consider progressing to one of the following qualifications:
· City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Construction Skills (multi-skilled)
· City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma in Bricklaying and Painting and decorating

Course Structure

The course can be made up of various modules; units include learning of basic skills within Painting & Decorating, Carpentry & Joinery, Tiling a plain wall and Bricklaying.

Unit 111 Painting & Wallpapering
This unit will teach you to:
•​Calculate area for wallpaper and paint
•​Prepare and paste wallpaper in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
•​Apply wallpaper to previously prepared area
•​Apply paint systems to various surfaces and substrates

Unit 121 Constructing one brick walling
This unit will teach you to:
• Measure and set up profiles to given specifications
• Calculate the number of bricks required to build the wall
• Mix materials required to build the wall
• Build one brick thick wall to meet specification

Unit 101 Introduction to health & safety paper-based assessment.
This unit will teach you to:
• 1.1 state the importance of health and safety in the construction industry
• 1.2 state the roles of Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
• 1.3 state the main regulations covered under the Health and Safety act
• 1.4 state the responsibilities of individuals within the construction industry.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this qualification – anyone 16 or above wishing to develop hand-skills in construction.

Progression

Depending upon a learners personal preference, there would be progression opportunities for further development within a Level 1 or Level 2 Diploma. These are generally full time (FT) or part time day (PTD)
