Physics is the study of matter, energy, space and time. A Level Physics builds upon the knowledge of your GCSEs in science. The content is significantly broader and deeper, than you will have experienced so far. You will require a passion for Physics to fuel your studies during this demanding but very rewarding course.

You will work towards examinations at the end of your second year that determine your final grade, following the AQA specification. You will also work towards your CPAC practical endorsement, a certificate which accompanies your A Level and prepares you for university practical work.

Course Structure

The course is taught as a series of 8 units across two years covering a broad spectrum of physics:

  • Particles and Radiation
  • Waves and Optics
  • Mechanics and Materials
  • Electricity
  • Fields and their consequences
  • Nuclear Physics
  • Astrophysics

Typically, you will study this course alongside 2 or 3 other A-Level subjects. You can apply for any A-Level combination, however, please be aware that not all subject combinations can be guaranteed. Timetabling constraints mean that some subjects may run at the same time, making it difficult to accommodate every combination. Our team will discuss any clashes with you at the point of enrolment, and we’ll work with you to discuss alternatives where required.

It is not possible to study a combination of A-Level and vocational or T-Level courses together. These pathways are designed differently making it impractical to deliver them side by side.

Entry Requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs at a minimum of grade 5, including a 5 in English and a 6 in maths. Your science GCSEs can be either combined science, and you must achieve a 66 or better.

Assessment methods

The assessment of the Physics A-level takes place as 3 two-hour exam papers in May/June of your second year. This are each focussed on different elements of the course with the third paper focussed on practical elements of the course. You will also complete assessed practical science for your CPAC practical endorsement certificate. You will also complete AS exams in your first year covering the first 4 units of the course. Across the two years there will be several in class assessments including end of unit testing, mock exams and end of first year exams. This builds your knowledge and skill base towards your final exams.
