Working in the electrical industry requires a wide range of skills and comes with a high level of responsibility. Electricians must work in residential, commercial, and industrial environments to install, maintain and fix a number of electrical equipment, including complex wiring and machinery. Electricians can work as part of a team, but all are personally responsible for maintaining their own safety and the safety of others by providing a quality and reliable service. With the rise in renewable energy, electricians are carrying out more varied work than ever before, including working with wind turbines, ‘smart’ heating systems and solar panels. Therefore, it’s important for electricians to stay up to date with the latest techniques and qualifications. Chesterfield College’s Level 3 Electrotechnical apprenticeship standard has been designed with the needs of employers in mind, ensuring that the practical skills and health and safety awareness knowledge that electricians need are embedded within a comprehensive training and development plan.

Electrical safety is an important area of Electricians’ work. On completion of their work the electrical installation must be safe to use. Electricians must comply with statutory and non-statutory requirements including the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Electricity at Work Regulations (EAWR), the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE), and Working at Height Regulations, BS 7671 and related codes of practice and industry guidance including but not limited to the Building Safety Act.

Off-the-job training

The apprentice needs to provide evidence of the learning they are receiving from the employer which is called Off the Job Learning. This needs to be a minimum of 6 hours per week. The training can include onsite training they receive from a mentor, standard induction training and general day-to-day learning of new tasks. Off-the-job training can form part of regular weekly sessions or combined for larger blocks of time, depending on the approach which works best for the employer. Chesterfield College can help advise on appropriate off-the-job training if required.
