Progression

Those who successfully complete this apprenticeship can go on to work in the accounting and finance industry in a number of roles such as assistant accountant, wages clerk and financial administrator. There is also the option to progress further by studying the Level 4 Professional Accounting Technician apprenticeship with Learning Unlimited or go on to study a related degree at university.

Accounting is a key support function which is needed to support the efficiency of a variety of businesses across all sectors. From chartered accountants and bookkeepers to payroll officers and wages clerks, there are a number of roles and progression opportunities within the finance industry. Accounting assistants are responsible for processing and paying invoices, recording receipts and payments, handling company expenses and submitting tax and VAT returns. With experience, these duties could expand to include more complex tasks such as planning budgets and preparing reports.

Our Level 3 Assistant Accountant apprenticeship standard has been designed with the needs of employers in mind, ensuring that the practical maths skills and business operations knowledge that accountants need are embedded within a comprehensive training and development plan.

Off-the-job training

Every apprenticeship includes off-the-job training equating to 20% of the learning undertaking – equivalent to one day per week. Off-the-job training must take place during employed time and should not consist of the usual daily duties and responsibilities the apprentice undertakes as part of their role.

Off-the-job training must be relevant to the apprenticeship standard and can consist of a wide range of work and tasks, from projects, lectures and seminars to blended learning and regular training to use specialist equipment. Off-the-job training can form part of regular weekly session or combined for larger blocks of time, depending on the approach which works best for the employer. The Learning Unlimited team can help advise on appropriate off-the-job training if required.

Month 1-10

  • Functional Skills English and maths
  • Level 3 AAT exams:
  • Synoptic mock exam (ethics and spreadsheets)
  • Advanced bookkeeping
  • Final accounts preparation
  • Indirect tax
  • Management accounting costing

Month 11-12

  • Gateway meeting with employer,apprentice and Learning Unlimited
  • Finalise reflective portfolio based on workplace activities

Month 13-18

  • Level 3 advanced synoptic assessment
  • Professional discussion (exam conditions)
