Student and teacher looking at GCSE results

It’s been busy on campus today as students have been coming in to collect their GCSE results. With staff on hand to support and answer questions, it’s been amazing to hear about the success and progression of so many of our students.

Nicola’s story

As an adult learner with 4 children and a full time job, Nicola came to evening classes to make sure she could get the grade she needed to progress in her career. She has spent the last 5 years doing her teaching degree part time and the GCSE’s are what kept holding her back, after a third attempt in maths she has finally passed and is able to progress her career in education even further.

“Maths isn’t my strength, but I didn’t give up and that’s why I feel really proud. Now I can apply for teacher training and it could change everything this year, it’s exactly what I needed and I just can’t believe it. As an adult learner, I was a bit scared at first, but I always felt included. The teachers were always helpful and checking in on us, so I felt looked after and not like I’d just come to learn.”

Mila’s story

GCSEs are such an important part of education and they can open up so many doors for people of all ages, allowing them to progress onto the next stage in their education. Mila achieved a 6 in GCSE Maths and a 4 in GCSE English and she now has a number of choices for what she wants to do next in her education.

“Getting these results means I can go onto a course that I like and I don’t have to repeat the exams again. I can take on another few GCSEs and I’m planning on going into Level 2 Mechanical Engineering or Level 3 Health and Social Care.”

Harry’s story

Harry works at the College in the Media Department and was a previous student only a few years ago, he made the decision as an adult learner to go back and retake his GCSE English, this has been an incredible achievement for him.

“I’m very dyslexic and I have now doubled my previous grade. I’m so happy with it, it’s going to open up so many more training opportunities for me and I’ll be able to get into more teaching going forward.”

Josh’s story

As important as the grades are, that’s not the only thing you can take away from being at College, with so many of our students talking about how their confidence has improved and the support their teachers have given them has been incredibly influential. Josh was able to achieve a four both in GCSE English language and GCSE Maths but he is taking away so much more than just his GCSEs today.

“I’m very proud of myself, this puts me onto what I want to do within public service. I really struggled in school, but College has brought my confidence back and ultimately, they’ve pushed me across the line for the future.”
