Preparing for Your Child’s Progression Interview (Ages 16–18): A Guide for Parents

17 March 2026

Over the coming weeks, current students that are due to complete their course this summer, will be taking part in their progression interview with their Personal Tutor. These conversations are an important opportunity for your child to reflect on their achievements so far, discuss their ambitions, and plan their next steps after their current course finishes.

As a parent or guardian, you play a vital role in supporting your child through this process.

What is a Progression Interview?

A progression interview is a conversation between your child and Tutor.  During the interview we will:

  • Review their current progress and achievements so far
  • Discuss future goals and career interests
  • Explore the most appropriate next step for them
  • Provide guidance on education, training, or employment pathways
  • Set formal targets to support achievement and progression

This will ensure your child has a clear and realistic plan for the future that aligns with both their career ambitions as well as their levels of progress.

  • Talking about their interests and strengths – Help them reflect on what they enjoy and what they are good at.
  • Discussing career ideas – Even if they are unsure about their future, talking about possibilities can help them start thinking about direction.
  • Encouraging preparation – Ask your child to think about:

o What they have achieved this year

o What they would like to do next

o Any questions they may want to ask during the interview

o Reassuring them – Remind them that the interview is there to support them, not test them.
