Kieran hopes to go from studying Business to being a Barrister
22 May 2022Kieran Larner, a Level 2 Business Student has his career journey planned out. His dream is to become a barrister after several more years of hard work and exams. Kieran tells us about his journey to studying at college and how his course has exceeded his expectations. “About 4 years ago I stopped going to school because I was severely bullied. I decided last year that I was going to do it, I was going to go to college. I spoke to a careers advisor and they directed me towards business, I spoke to Sarah (the curriculum lead) and she got me onto the Level 2 Business Course.”
Kieran wasn’t sure what he wanted to do, but now that he is on the course, it’s definitely something he wants to progress.
“I have it all planned out. I’m going to start Level 3 in September, once I have completed the two years of Level 3, I plan to go to university and study law.”
Our Business Studies Course is allowing Kieran to progress onto a law degree to hopefully secure his dream job.
“It’s my dream to be a barrister. There have been times when I’ve not been sure but I’ve always gone back to wanting to do law. I read about law all the time. I will have to do several different courses, after the degree, I will have to do a bar practice and then pupillage and then you qualify.”
After Kieran’s experience at school, he was apprehensive about coming to college. We are so glad the college exceeded his expectations.
“Parts of the course are better than what I thought it was going to be. The people that you are around, I feel like it’s a good environment. When I started I was absolutely terrified but once I came here it was absolutely amazing. I’ve enjoyed learning about all the marketing, that’s been amazing. We’ve done a lot of market research. We had to do a business project where we created a charity, organise an event and advertise the charity. There was a unit on producing documents in a business environment and that was all based on York Dungeons. We got to create posters and leaflets and go along to York Dungeons. On the Level 3 course, there’s a lot of research which is useful for doing law. You also learn about business law, the laws in business and all the policies and procedures.”
Kieran has already started gathering industry work experience for his UCAS points.
“I did a marketing work experience at Spire Radio. It lasted about 3 weeks. I was doing stuff behind the scenes, I was creating marketing emails.”
Kieran was extremely nervous before starting college we wanted him to give advice to those of you who are anxious about a new environment.
“Honestly, I make it sound like it’s easier said than done, but just do it. I spent weeks so paranoid and overthinking but I don’t regret it one single bit. There’s been a lot of support from our tutors, you can approach them and talk to them and they’ll do everything they can to support you. There have been times when I’ve been struggling with my anxiety but Sarah would do something to try and help.” Find out more about our business courses here
