The annual GCSE results day welcomed a flurry of students and parents into campus this morning to collect results with friends and family. We caught up with some of the students picking up their results to see how they’ve got on and what their plans on.

A day of opening doors to next steps

John attended college one night a week to gain a fantastic Grade 8 in GCSE English, he explains “Well 25 years ago I only achieved a D in English and it’s been on my mind ever since. Even though I’ve been to university and graduated with my degree in the meantime, not having my GCSE English has always been something that has bothered me. The tutors at college are so lovely and there has been no shortage of support on offer, I’ve really enjoyed my time here to be honest. To anyone else considering returning to learning as an adult, don’t put it off, don’t wait until you urgently need it and it becomes a barrier to what you want to do. If you don’t have the GCSE it’s free so why wouldn’t you take advantage of that? There are a lot of adult students who come to GCSE classes at college so you won’t be on your own amongst younger peers during your studies.”

Elliott achieved a Grade 5 in English and can’t wait to get started on a Level 2 Brickwork course now, “I struggle with English so sometimes find it frustrating as a subject however the tutors have been great in supporting me. I’m really happy with my Grade 5 and I’m now moving on to my Level 2 in Brickwork.”

In similar fashion, George now can’t wait to progress in his Plumbing course, “I’m delighted I’ve passed my Maths GCSE as I can now progress onto my Level 2 Plumbing course. The goal is to work as a qualified plumber alongside my dad so I can’t wait to get going with the course now.”

Joseph is over the moon having now passed his Maths GCSE, explaining “I’ve been getting Grade 3s for the last few years so to finally pass is such a huge relief. Ever since Year 6 at school I’ve struggled with my Maths so to finally achieve it, words can’t describe how I feel. I’m going to get all my family and friends together tonight and just celebrate, I’m over the moon. I want to be a paramedic so I’m looking at either apprenticeship options with Yorkshire or East Midlands Ambulance Services now but I’m also considering a Top-up Degree here at college as another option. Karen, my Maths tutor, has been an incredible help so I’d like to say a big thank you to her. I wouldn’t have passed without her support. Adam Godber in Health and Social care has also been a constant source of enthusiasm, encouraging me to keep going with it all.”
