Derbyshire Fire and Rescue visit our Public Services students

09 June 2026

The Public Services department recently benefited from an engaging and informative visit from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, providing students with a valuable opportunity to experience aspects of emergency response work first-hand.

During the visit, students were able to explore a range of specialist vehicles and examine the equipment used in a variety of rescue scenarios, including road traffic collisions, fires, and other emergencies. This hands-on experience helped to bring their classroom learning to life, giving them a clearer understanding of how theory is applied in real-world contexts.

A key strength of this visit was the emphasis on collaborative working. Fire and rescue personnel shared insights into how effective teamwork, communication, and coordination are essential when responding to incidents, often involving multiple emergency services working together under pressure. Students were encouraged to ask questions, engage in discussions, and consider how collaborative approaches improve outcomes in critical situations.

Working in partnership with external organisations such as Derbyshire Fire and Rescue provides significant benefits for both students and staff. It enriches the curriculum by offering authentic learning experiences, helps to build students’ confidence and interpersonal skills, and promotes a deeper awareness of potential career pathways within the public services sector. Additionally, these collaborative opportunities foster professional relationships between the department and industry experts, ensuring that teaching remains current, relevant, and aligned with real-world expectations.

Overall, the visit highlighted the importance of collaboration not only within emergency services, but also between educational providers and external partners. By working together, they create meaningful learning opportunities that develop students’ skills, knowledge, and readiness for future employment.
