Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Inspire Public Services Students

27 November 2025

Students on the Public Services courses were given a unique opportunity to learn directly from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service when Chesterfield Station’s White Watch visited the college this week.

The crew delivered an engaging session that was closely linked to our curriculum, covering careers and fitness. They provided valuable insight into the firefighter application process, with particular emphasis on the fitness standards required to succeed.

In addition, the team addressed topics from the Emergency Planning units 12 and 13, explaining how procedures and priorities within the service have evolved in response to the Grenfell disaster. This provided students with a real-world perspective on how national events influence local emergency planning.

The visit was highly interactive, with students asking questions about equipment, costs, and daily operations. Many were surprised to discover the crew’s fondness for the famous “Big Red Key.”

The highlight of the day was a guided tour of the fire engine, where students had the chance to get hands-on with a wide range of firefighting equipment. The experience not only brought their studies to life but also inspired many to consider a future career in the fire and rescue service.
