Supported Internships

What is a Supported Internship?

Supported internships are for young people aged 16 — 24 with learning difficulties or learning disabilities, who want to get a job and currently need extra support to do this.

They are a programme of learning and work, that gives students training, support and essential skills they need to help them get a job. Most of the learning is done in the workplace, with you as an employer providing work experience, and guidance to do a job role and learn the skills needed.

Internships are unpaid and last for at least six months — they’re all about working towards getting a paid job, and wherever possible doing a supported internship will enable students to move into a paid job at the end of the programme.

We estimate that students would spend two days in a workplace, with regular support and communication from college, plus one day in college developing relevant academic skills and working on personal targets.

How will I as the employer, and the student be supported?

If on a group visit to your workplace, there will be a Tutor and Learning Support Assistant that will support during the visit.

If on a work placement or voluntary placement, students will be accompanied by a Job Coach unless they are ready to attend the workplace on their own.

If they are on a Supported Internship, a Job Coach will be the main source of support for you and the student, supporting you to make any reasonable adjustments and supporting the student to meet the requirement of their role.

Why are supported internships important?

Supported internships aim to help young people gain paid employment by giving them the skills and experience by learning in the “real” workplace.

Supported internships are flexible and we will work with your business to ensure the internship works for all concerned.

Why they are good for your business!

  • The placement can act as an extended interview – giving you an increased chance of getting the right person to fill your vacancies and bringing new skills to your workforce.
  • Interns can be trained by you ensuring they undertake tasks in line with your requirements and standards.
  • Offering a placement will increase your organisations disability confidence and you will be supported by a job coach throughout.
  • There may be an opportunity for you to give a junior member of staff mentoring or supervisory experience
