Course Overview

If you have an interest in improving your English skills in a practical context and gaining a national qualification at the level appropriate for you, this course is for you.

The levels available are: Entry Level 1, Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2*.

Our tutors provide will you with effective individualised support from start to finish.

Courses are available on a daytime or evening basis.

*Level 2 is equivalent to a GCSE at grade 4.

Course Content

The elements covered in Functional Skills English at each level are:

  • Reading comprehension skills and exam assessment.
  • Writing skills and exam assessment.
  • Speaking and listening assessment – could be a group discussion, a debate or an individual presentation or speech.

Each term concentrates on a different element, typically:

  • September to December – Reading elements.
  • January to March – Writing elements.
  • April to July – Speaking and Listening Assessment.

Entry Requirements

There are no entry requirements for this course but you will be required to sit a short assessment and interview before you enrol to assess your current level.

You may decide that you want to progress further with a GCSE English qualification, other college courses or use your qualification to gain employment.
