Breast ironing and flattening

What is Breast Flattening or Breast Ironing?

“The process during which young pubescent girls’ breasts are ironed, massaged, flattened and/or pounded down over a period of time, sometimes over a number of years, in order for the breasts to disappear or delay the development of the breasts entirely.”

In most cases, the abuser incorrectly believes that the procedure is in the best interest of the child and it is a form of protection.  This is not the case, it is a form of abuse. The health consequences of breast flattening or breast ironing can be significant for the girl, and it is highly likely this will affect emotional and social development.

If you or someone you know is at risk in this way you can contact the Safeguarding Team at Chesterfield college on 01246 500688 or email ccsafe@chesterfield.ac.uk.
