We have been shining a spotlight on some of our talented students who submitted work for the Arts Festival 2021. The students have submitted a range of pieces using a variety of mediums to create their final pieces. We want to share the meaning behind some of their submissions as well as the beautiful pieces that shine standing alone.
Martha Bramwell, a BTEC Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media Practice student has been inspired by communities and what makes the place we call home. Martha goes into detail about her research around her piece and how she worked with the community and residents to make a collaborative perspective piece.
She wrote:
“I began my exploration of what makes a house a home by researching; the home itself, inside the house and Malvern Road. I also gathered my own primary data through interviews with classmates, friends and Malvern Road residents. I captured photographs of gardens, homes and personal objects. Drawing together these observations into a collection of many different pieces of artwork.
As part of my project I have designed, planned and executed a community project with the residents of Malvern Road. This is a single road in Chesterfield, North Derbyshire, where I have lived for my entire life. 17 households contributed to the project, with participants creating artwork using different mediums in response to the question “what makes a house a home?” Additionally, each person was asked to complete a questionnaire with their thoughts and reflections on living in their home. Using elements of the submissions of each household, I composed a large-scale, collaborative piece. The final outcome is this digitally printed mural that offers an intimate and insightful perspective of life on Malvern Road – the place that we call home.”
