Owen studied media, now music and if he gets his grades, he will be studying Esports for 2 years starting in September 2021.
Studying at Chesterfield
Owen came straight to join us at Chesterfield after finishing school to study media. From a young age, he has been making stop motion short films and from that decided he wanted to study media at college.
The short film skills he had picked up came in handy; as part of his application to join the media course was to create a short film, with this and Owen’s grades combined he joined the course here at Chesterfield.
Choosing to study Esports
Owen came to study media because of his love for film. Since then, his love for esports and gaming has grown and his many hobbies outside of college and the esports team he joined last year. He told us how he is “willing to put the time in and will enjoy the course as he is combining his hobbies with his studies.” Owen told us how he spent 1,500 hours alone on rocket league last year.
A plethora of transferable skills
The mention of esports excited and interested Owen as it’s something he spends a lot of time doing, he finds it fun, he knows he could be successful and esports careers have a high wage.
Owen mentioned the plethora of academic and personal skills you develop through the media course such as, software design, graphics, marketing, hosting games, leadership, teamwork, confidence, team building and persona styles to name a few. These are skills that he will take with him in his studies next year and throughout his career
Owen has been playing for the esports team for the last year and has already been an asset to the team and won a competition.
Owens excitement for his course next year
We asked Owen what he was most looking forward to on the course, he mentioned job prospects but also being around like-minded people who will be able to have fun conversations about the industry and hobbies he is most interested in. He also told us how excited he is about the new media facilities, the technologies and everyone working together.
The start of his journey
One of our incredible tutors Ebony, heard Owen talking about his interests on an open day and guided him over to the digital stand. Owen thought it sounded fun and exciting and decided to ditch his original plan of doing mechanics. He thought it was great how a tutor recognised his potential and opened his eyes to the course.
Owen is glad how he has options and his foot in many doors after studying a variety of media courses. He will take aspects from media and music into his esports course and develop his knowledge further. He told us how learning about camera angles, cinematic shots, level design, graphic design and set design will be incredibly useful and also designing his own game music to have a unique spin on his work.
Owen is incredibly happy now he is doing exactly what he wants to do. We can’t wait to see all his time and effort turn into success.
