Our Travel and Tourism students took members of the congregation from the Holy Trinity Church on tours around the town of Chesterfield as part of their work experience.
This project allowed them to practice researching, tour planning, marketing and designing. It was also a great opportunity for them to practice public speaking to increase their confidence when speaking to members of the public.
We spoke to Annaleise Sawyer about the day and how she found working with the public, she said:
“Me and my friend Kaleah worked alongside each other to do a tour around chesterfield. The aim of the tour was to bring the community of chesterfield together and share with them historic information that they might not have known about chesterfield until now.
The tour went great and the guests on the tour commented how they enjoyed it as well. The tour benefited both me and the guests as they learnt something new and I developed my people skills and confidence by putting myself out to the public and speaking with them. Not only did I get to teach them something, but they also taught me something about them, which was lovely!”
Megan Marsden told us how the tour improved her confidence:
“My tour company was called Megan’s tour works, we took a small group of guests ages 8 to 80 around chesterfield for a tour and I was given really positive feedback. They found the information interesting, they said that it helped with loneliness and they have requested we do further tours in the future. The whole experience developed my confidence and I learned different skills.”
It’s great to see our students getting involved with the community of Chesterfield and that they are able to improve their people skills with kind members of the public. This opportunity will also count towards their work experience, allowing them to show experience of working in the industry and working with people from different backgrounds, not just their classmates.
