Engineering student Thomas secures an apprenticeship after his first year studying engineering

Thomas Peacock is currently studying Level 2 Mechanical Maintenance and Manufacturing Engineering at Chesterfield College.

Thomas came straight from school into the Level 2 course and now, after only completing one year, he has secured an apprenticeship and is ready to step into the working world in July.

We spoke to Thomas about his time at college and what he expects with his next 3 years as a mechanical engineering apprentice.

Why did you apply for the mechanical engineering course at Chesterfield College?

“I have loved cars from a young age, that’s why I applied for the course” explains Thomas who has been working on a car at home with his dad. His dad has always been interested in mechanics and that’s what inspired him from a young age. “It set me on my way to go into a career in mechanics, getting paid to do something I really enjoy.”

What have you learned this year that will be valuable for the next steps of your career?

“The theory at college has taught me how to put research into practice. I’ve loved the practical element of learning and it is a way of working that suits me as a person. I enjoy finding out how things work from systems to machinery and also why health and safety are so important. I’ll build on top of this knowledge during my apprenticeship and hopefully come out a top-quality engineer”.

Thomas explains, “You need to have your head screwed on whilst working in this industry in regard to health and safety, especially around machinery. Tutors have taught me always to be aware of the potential safety hazards and how easily things can go wrong.”

“The course has been really important for me. I didn’t look anywhere else as it was close to home and the facilities are absolutely fantastic. I would recommend the course to anyone!”

Did you know you wanted to do an apprenticeship?

Thomas spoke to his tutor about going into the working world as he was fed up with being stuck at home during the lockdown. “Damian, my tutor, said that an apprenticeship was the best route for me, he got in touch with an industry contact, found me a place and I got accepted after my successful interview.” It’s important that other students know that an apprenticeship can arise at any time on your course, it’s a great opportunity.

Thomas will be qualified in maintenance engineering at a degree level after 3 years, by that time he will still only be 20. Thomas says, “I am looking forward to starting work and having a routine. I have really enjoyed college, it’s been the best year of my life. There’s nothing like doing something you actually enjoy”.

“To make the most of this apprenticeship opportunity I’ll actually be moving away from home for the first time and working on plant compact equipment as a maintenance engineer in York”.

We’re wishing Thomas the very best of luck and we’re sure he’ll be a success! If you want to start your engineering journey then click the banner below and see which course can set you on the right career path.
