Carpentry and joinery in all forms is an exciting industry to be a part of, whether you chose to work on a construction site or undertake more creative artisan wood-craft projects.

There is a vast and varied market for contemporary wood and industrial style furniture, with up-cycled pieces becoming a fashionable and popular choice for any home.

Career options within the industry are broad and cover construction, maintenance and repair. Employers will benefit from gaining an apprentice who is building a range of knowledge and skills to become competent and valuable addition to their workforce.

The apprentice will continue to develop over the course of the programme and develop a level of independence, enabling them to progress within the industry.

Delivery plan and apprentice progression

Throughout the apprenticeship, the apprentice is supported by their work-based tutor, their classroom based tutor and employer mentor to ensure that they are progressing at the right pace and developing the skills and knowledge expected.

Learners will also have to attend learning and attempt the exams for functional skills level 2 in Maths and English prior to going through the gateway to end point assessment if they do not have an exemption at level 2 or equivalent.

  Off the job training

The apprentice needs to provide evidence of the learning they are receiving from the employer which is called Off the Job Learning. This needs to be a minimum of 6 hours per week. The training can include onsite training they receive from a mentor, standard induction training and general day-to-day learning of new tasks.

Off-the-job training can form part of regular weekly sessions or combined for larger blocks of time, depending on the approach which works best for the employer. The Chesterfield College team can help advise on appropriate off-the-job training if required.

Entry Requirements

  • Individuals will need a GCSE 3/D in English and Maths or equivalent.
  • Learners will also have to attend learning and attempt the exams for functional skills level 2 in Maths and English prior to going through the gateway to end point assessment if they do not have an exemption at level 2 or equivalent.

Upon successful completion apprentices can progress on to a number of job roles or further study options including:

  • Advanced Level 3 apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery
