Results day 2021: Student stories

We really enjoyed speaking to so many of our students who collected A level and Level 3 vocational results yesterday. It was great to hear about their success, where their results will take them next and what they have enjoyed about studying at college.

Students celebrate results

Luigi Manzione, studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Construction and the Built environment and achieved 3 distinctions.

“It feels amazing, I am so happy. I am hoping to go to university now, but I am also looking at degree apprenticeships. The flexibility of studying here has been good. Chesterfield College has got a really good community. It has been a good journey.”

Hollie Bircumshaw, studied A Level, history, English literature and criminology. She opened her envelope to discover she had achieved 3 A grades. She told us:

“I am still a bit in shock. I was a bit worried about history because I couldn’t tell how I did in my assessment. It paid off in the end though. I am deferring university for a year but I am doing some mentoring here at college with students doing GCSEs. Then I plan to go to Durham University next year. The teaching has been great and the courses have been really interesting. Everyone has been really encouraging, even through lockdown.”

Alexander Brassington, studied chemistry, maths and biology A level and got 2 As and an A*. He said:

“I was expecting slightly lower grades so I am really pleased. I was a little bit nervous but nothing was really normal so it was hard to take in what was happening. I am going to York University next. I know I have a place already to study Biomedical science. I have really enjoyed meeting new people and learning new stuff at college.”

Alice Holmes got impressive results with an A* in English Language, an A* in English literature and A in history.

“I wasn’t expecting those grades but I am really happy. I am going to study English at York University. I am going out for something to eat with my friends to celebrate now.”

Oliver Smith-Lawrence, was really pleased to find out he had achieved two As and a B in A Level Philosophy, business and psychology.

“I knew I had got into Exeter University to study Law but to find out I had two A grades was a real bonus. I have definitely had more freedom here compared to a sixth form at school. There’s always help here if you need it. All of our virtual lessons have been recorded so we could watch things back if we needed to.”

Ana Constantin studied a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science and found out today she had achieved 3 distinctions. She is going on to study Biomedical Science at university to help her on her journey to her dream career of becoming a surgeon.

“I jumped up and down when I got my results. It was such a hard year and I really wanted to get in to uni so I was so nervous. The moment I found out it was such a relief. I have only had 3 hours sleep! I loved studying here. Our tutors were so supportive. They offered me work experience working in the lab as well which has really helped me find other work in the sector. It was amazing. I’d give the tutors a 10 out of 10.”

Benjamin Clarke was pleased to find out he had achieved 3 A grades s in English literature, English language and history.  He told us:

“I am definitely happy with those results. We have had a long time to get ready for this so I have been pretty relaxed this morning. I am going to go home in a minute and accept my place at York University to study English Language and Linguistics.  The tutors here at college have been really supportive. I have enjoyed the ability to work a bit more independently here as well.”

Millie Slinn, studied criminology, biology and psychology and discovered she had achieved 3 As earlier today.

“I am so happy. I actually can’t believe it. I am genuinely in shock. I was really nervous last night and this morning. I am going on to study midwifery at Sheffield Hallam University. It hasn’t been the easiest of years but the teachers have been so helpful. I definitely recommend it to anyone. Teachers have always been there to answer questions and help you. You are made to feel really welcome.”
