Our Higher Education tutors have been nominated for Inspirational Mentor awards

Over the past year, a group of Sheffield Hallam University’s PGCE (Teacher Training) students undertook a training placement at Chesterfield College.

During their time at the college, they were mentored by our Higher Education (HE) staff members. At the end of the year, the PGCE students have the opportunity to nominate their mentors for awards granted by the university to recognise excellence in mentorship.

Four of our incredible tutors have been nominated for the awards this year, based on some heartfelt and positive feedback from the mentees. This is a fantastic and significant achievement for our tutors and we hope they are as proud of their nominations as we are. The support they have offered to their mentees is something we are passionate about at the college, to aid progression for our students at all levels and see them develop and progress in their learning and career.

Here are some of the comments submitted by the students:

Oliver Guy wrote:

Emily has been amazing from start to finish, and I couldn’t have asked for a better mentor. Any issue or concern I had I knew I could take to her, she had faith in my teaching ability even when I didn’t. I’ve loved every minute of my placement and a lot of this is down to Emily.  She even knitted my newborn child a blanket.”

Charlie Dwyer wrote:

The circumstances of my PGCE year made it an extremely difficult experience at various points; without Peter’s calm and encouraging presence I may not have made it to the end.”

Sophie Jefferies wrote:

“Vicki has given me the utmost support and I have been incredibly lucky to have her. She has gone above and beyond to see that I am cared for and getting the most out of my time here. She is extremely determined to fulfil her role to the best of her ability and has exceeded all my expectations. I have learnt a lot from her professionally and personally and she has made a huge impact on me as a teacher and person.”

Our tutors will be notified in early September if they are winners. If they are successful, they will be invited to a prize-giving event at Sheffield Hallam University’s graduation ceremony.

Whether our tutors win or not, we are incredibly proud of their fantastic teaching achievements and dedication to their mentees’ teaching careers.
