Kickstart Scheme helps young people develop new careers

Meet Georgia and Tyra. They recently joined the college team through the government’s Kickstart Scheme. The scheme offers out-of-work 16-24 year olds a chance to gain vital experience in industry and opens the door to permanent employment.  They told us how being part of the scheme has helped them to develop new skills and prepare for a new career.

Georgia is working with the Workskills team as a learning engagement administrator. She left university during the pandemic and was keen to start a career in education but wasn’t sure how to get the experience she needed. Without relevant experience she was finding it hard to get past the application and interview stage of jobs she applied for. Her local Job Centre Plus told her about Kickstart and the opportunity at college.

She told us

“The scheme funds you to work and achieve. In six months, you gain work experience and learn new skills as well as expand on talents you already have. It has created an action plan for me and has boosted my confidence in myself. I encourage anyone who might be thinking about the Kickstart scheme to do it. I had no work experience in education, struggled to get past applying and felt like I had no drive but now feel like I have so much ahead of me and all of those skills to do more.”

Tyra Rimmington has been working as curriculum administrator at college for just over a month. She joined the team as part of the government 6 month Kickstart programme which is helping her to get the experience she needs to change career paths. She worked in retail before the pandemic but lost her job in the first lockdown and was struggling to find work in a different sector without any other experience.
