As part of our Arts Festival 2021 we will be shining a spotlight on some of the work of our many talented students, and the meaning behind their submissions.
Katie Edwards, a BTEC Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media Practice student has been inspired by women’s fashion throughout history and the idea that women have no power over what they wear. She explains more about what inspired her collection ‘The Perception of Women’ 2021.
She wrote:
“For my final outcome, I wanted to portray the idea that women have no power over what they wear and that society perceives everything we do in such a negative way. The concept for my piece came about through looking at phrases that are constantly said to women, and then fashion throughout history. During the project I was particularly interested in monotyping and plaster workshops, looking into the impression of fabrics onto different medias. I was really inspired by Greek statues where they covered parts of the women’s bodies with drapes, adhering to the ‘male gaze’. I wanted to expose that into my final piece by focusing on doing plaster relief panels of specific areas of the garments I was using.”
Katie is going on to study Fine Art at Aberystwyth University in the autumn. She is just one of the incredible artists in this year’s festival. Visit our full gallery of submissions from a range of creative areas within the college here.
