Jade gets her career in the auto industry off to a great start

After completing a Vehicle Accident Repair and Paint course, Jade Watson has secured a job in an industry she loves. She is now working full-time in the auto industry using the skills she has been developing for the last two years.

We asked her to tell us more about her job in the paint room at Autosupplies in Bolsover, who supply a range of parts and refinishing supplies and equipment to retail and trade customers.

How did you get the job?

“One of the tutors at college put me in touch with the company and I contacted them to let them know I was about to finish my course and wanted to work in the industry. They asked me to come for an interview and I got the job!”

What does it involve?

“We mix all different types of paints and do colour matching for people in the car industry.”

How does the job you do now relate to what you studied at college?

“It was a big part of the course to do colour matching and mixing of paint so it ties in really well. At college we mixed to put paint to panel.  Here we need a deeper understanding of what kind of paint does what and what you need to create different colours.”

What would you say to other women who are considering careers in the auto industry?

“I think there are actually more females working here than men. I don’t think it is an issue any more. In fact, they actively want more females in the industry. I would say to anyone thinking about a career in the industry to just do it and don’t let it hold you back.”

Can you tell us more about your time at college and why you wanted to do the course?

“I was 24 when I started college and did two years study to get my level 2 and level 3 qualifications.

Before I started the course, I was pottering in jobs I didn’t really enjoy. When I had my little girl I decided I wanted to do something I enjoyed and start to build a career. I have always been interested in cars but didn’t really know which side I wanted to do. I went to an open day at college and spoke to the tutors who were really helpful. They went through my course options and showed me what careers the different courses could lead onto.”

How does it feel to have finished college and have a full time job in the industry?

“I was honestly really sad when I left college because it was a lovely group to be in. We were all close and helped one another out. It was a really enjoyable course.

I didn’t expect to be here now when I first came to the open day though. It is so nice to think the hard work I have put in for two years has resulted in a job in the industry.”

Congratulations to Jade! We look forward to seeing how she paints a successful future for herself.
