Industry Week in Health and Social Care

Industry week – what went on?

Our Health and Social Care students heard from more than 16 inspiring industry speakers last week, they learnt about the wide range of career paths available in the sector. We spoke to the departmental academic coach, Jo, who told us about the highlights of the week and all the great positive feedback from the students.

“Last week was a testament to a greater understanding of the very diverse careers the industry can offer.”

Speakers and professionals from the industry

Our staff arranged for between 3-6 speakers a day from different types of health and social care professions to talk to our students about their careers and experience in the industry.

Diverse careers within the industry

Jo said: “The best bits were the professions that are not widely known, such as the operating department technicians and occupational therapists. Our students come into the subject thinking it is just for paramedics, nursing and social workers. Last week was a testament to a greater understanding of the very diverse careers Health and Social Care can offer.”

Real-life stories

Our students learnt about the benefits of different roles, and the real day to day tasks they would do as part of a range of jobs. Our students were left with greater thirst for understanding the different careers within the industry.

Future careers and opportunities for our students

This is just one way the department help students to understand the future careers available to them after completing their course. Students on the Health and Social Care courses available at college have the opportunity to hear from a range of speakers a few times a year, alongside gaining valuable work experience hours with local employers.

What a great motivating week for our students. Having an industry week allows students to explore careers that they might not have been aware of or considered as an option!
