Employability course helps prepare for a future in the Police Force

John Martin decided to return to Chesterfield College to study the PCSO SWAP (Sector-based Work Academy Programme) in collaboration with Derbyshire Police. We caught up with him to find out how the course has inspired him to be the best version of himself.

Why did you decide to start this course?

I was speaking to someone at the Jobcentre and they told me this course was on offer at Chesterfield College. I thought I had nothing to lose and I was interested what the course had to offer. I decided to give it a chance and see if it could help me out.

This is a two-week course and it teaches you so many skills – everything from wellbeing to healthcare, as well as crime and how we can manage crime.

It really helps you build an understanding of mental health and people management. Regardless of the workplace you’re heading into, it helps you to have a better understanding of how to deal with different people and situations.

How are you finding the course so far?

I’ve found it great so far – I really like how inclusive the course is. People are very friendly and easy going. I never feel left out and if I have a question to ask, I always feel comfortable asking it.

Our tutors have been very supportive and helpful and there’s lots of people on the course who share common interests.

What’s your goal for the future and how has the course helped you to progress towards that goal?

I’d like to get into the Police Service. I’d like to serve the public and make sure there’s someone there for the people who need it.

On the course, we look at call handling. You get an idea of what you may be doing if that’s the role or profession you want to go into.

So far, the course has opened my mind up to different possibilities and it’s definitely made me want to do more courses. I think it helps that the people involved are so supportive – it makes you want to get out and do more and achieve what you can to the best of your ability. It really inspires you and motivates you to get out there.

What advice would you give someone considering an employability course?

Be patient and open minded. I know some people have bad experiences in education when they’re younger but it’s important to be open minded whatever you do because you never know – it could be the best thing you ever do. I’ve had such a great time on the course!
