Course Overview

This is an ideal course if you work in a helping role, interested in enhancing your people and communication skills and/or if you wish to progress to becoming a qualified counsellor.

This certificate has been created to enable you to develop knowledge and understanding of counselling by exploring the professional frameworks and established codes of conducts required in the personal qualities and professional competencies of counsellors.

You will study the foundations of counselling and the underpinning theories associated with it. This qualification provides a basic understanding of the three main areas of counselling theory and how they relate to current practice.

You will also begin to acquire practical skills in developing, maintaining and concluding a basic counselling session; this will allow you to experience professional practice within the boundaries of an ethical framework.

The course is part time and runs for 3 hours a week over 24 weeks

Course Content

Students will undertake three mandatory components:

  • The Fundamentals of Counselling
  • Introduction to Counselling Skills
  • Introduction to Counselling Theory

And one optional component chosen from the following:

  • Introduction to Counselling in the Workplace
  • Introduction to Working with Trauma
  • Introduction to Working with Grief and Loss
  • Introduction to Working with Children and Young People

Students must achieve three mandatory components and a minimum of one optional component to achieve this qualification.

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this qualification, but if you do not have a minimum of Level 2 in maths and English (or equivalent) you are strongly advised to re-sit them alongside this qualification. Functional Skills and GCSEs are both available and the enrolment choice will initially be based on the level of initial assessment and the future progression choice.
