Course Overview

This Derby County FC Elite Football Academy Pathway at Level 2 will be varied course in terms of content, and will have a strong theme linking to sports coaching and the art of being an effective sports coach.

This course is linked to football in the main and you will participate and coach in football and other sports where the units require knowledge of a variety of sports. On this course you will complete various work experiences, this is really important to your personal development as a coach. Within the course the sports are broken down to the technical and tactical elements and then we look at how we can improve player’s ability levels both at grassroots and elite levels.

Another strong element of the course is physically planning and running sports coaching sessions and events. You will look into the life of a professional athlete and investigate their lifestyles and what keeps them performing at the highest level. If students wish to get involved in the college sports teams this would not be a problem as we have planned the course around any training and game commitments.

Students will also have the opportunity to go on education visits to various sports facilities both locally and nationally. During a normal week you will be in college for 3 days, this may be split up over the week and this could include full days and half days. If you need to do Maths and English resits this is will be additional time which is usually an extra half day for each of the additional subjects.

Course Content

Within the course the sports are broken down to the technical and tactical elements and then we look at how we can improve player’s ability levels both at grassroots and elite levels. Another strong element of the course is planning and running sports coaching sessions and events. You will look into the life of a professional athlete and investigate their lifestyles and what keeps them performing at the highest level.

As part of the course maths and English is implemented skills developed throughout all of lessons, from planning the timings in 1 hour coaching sessions to writing up coaching session plans. Maths and English are also an additionality to this course and students have the opportunity to resit both Maths and English around the main programme.

Within this course you will study both onsite here at Chesterfield College but will also have lessons at Queens Park Leisure Centre and South Chesterfield Golf Club.

On the course you will have access to other qualifications such as the pool lifeguard qualification, tennis leaders award and also Tri Golf training. If you wish to get involved in the college sports teams this would not be a problem as we have planned the course around any training and game commitments. You will also have the opportunity to go on education visits to various sports facilities both locally and nationally.

Entry Requirements

The entry requirements for this course are at least 4 GCSE grade 3’s with a keen interest in sport and in particular sports coaching. Alternatively a Level 1 in Sport or a Level 1 in Vocational Studies.

Assessment Methods

  • In this course you have the power to decide your how you will be assessed! Some students prefer to write or type up their work on mobile phones laptops or tablets. Some students prefer to just give verbal answers recorded using phones and then submitting the file to the tutor for marking. Practical assessments take place as much as possible. Tutors on this course prefer students to carry out newly developed knowledge and skills on a practical basis. Types of assessment include:
  • Written/Typed assessments
  • Verbal assessments
  • Presentations in front of your class
  • Practical demos
  • Group work

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress into a range of areas to include:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity
  • Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Sport and Exercise Science
  • Level 2 Diploma Entry to the Uniformed Services
  • Employment in the sports sector
