Services to Business – Employer

Business Apprenticeships

We currently offer Business Administration Level 3, Level 3 Customer Services Specialist, Level 3 Team Leader and Level 5 Operations Manager.

Every apprenticeship includes off-the-job training – equivalent to 6 hours per week. This takes place during the time normally spent at work but does not include the usual daily duties and responsibilities carried out as part of their normal role. It can consist of work and tasks ranging from projects, lectures and seminars to day release, blended learning and training to use specialist equipment.

It can form part of regular weekly sessions or be combined for larger blocks of time, depending on the approach that works best for the employer.

Why take on an apprentice?

  • a fresh approach and fresh ideas
  • improved productivity
  • reduced recruitment costs
  • a significant return on investment
  • addresses any skills gaps
  • helps shape a loyal workforce

How does an apprenticeship programme work?

An apprentice will learn while they work. This may take the form of a day release to a college or other centre of learning, or they could be based on your premises for five days a week, completing their studies at work; how the apprenticeship is designed is based on the needs of you and your apprentice.

You don’t need to employ a new member of staff in order to benefit from apprenticeships. Most employers choose to recruit new people as apprentices but you can place an existing member of staff on an apprenticeship if they have taken on additional responsibilities or moved to a new role. This can be an effective way of training members of staff who have been identified as having great potential and want to develop their skills further.

Testimonials

HR Development Manager, Kirsty Norman, who selects the cohort of apprentices for Derbyshire Constabulary has also sung the praises of Lecturer Alison Patterson. She told us:

“Ally’s teaching is facilitative, experiential, motivating and fun and the Mentoring Programme she delivers is informative, thought-provoking and at times touches the emotions.  Without a doubt, her intention and destination are to inspire our apprentices to be the very best they can be, whilst successfully supporting them from education into full-time careers. With Mentoring Training now a firm fixture of our annual programme, all the pieces of our tripartite jigsaw have now come together.  This workshop is a ‘must-have’ for all employers who are serious about developing and growing their apprentices to support their succession plans for the future. Our Apprentices, Line Managers and the Constabulary, as a whole, are lucky to have Learning Unlimited working with us as part of our Young People Strategy”

Rachel Pemberton, a current member of staff, studied Level 4 Business Administration. Rachel loves working at college and has enjoyed building her skills around her current job title.

“I studied my Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeship at college, so the natural progression was to do my Level 4. I really enjoy working at college and building my skills around my job role. It’s let me have more opportunities.”

Becki Hunter – City Couriers

“Finding the right apprentice is key. The confidence you show in an apprentice rubs off on them and will help them become more confident in a work environment. It is really important that you are willing to learn alongside them. It is not free labour, you have to invest in them.”

Stacey Davies-Bowler – Pinewood property estates

“Without young people coming through, any industry gets stagnant. If companies are not giving young people a chance and supporting them to learn, they are going to find a huge void in their workforce. We have had great success with apprentices over the years. It is good to see young people develop in the organisation.”
