Beauty business owners inspire our students with how they started their career

Pretty Sins, a local makeup business came in to talk to our beauty therapy students about their business, how they make their own products and how they came to set up and run their own beauty business.

Our students finished the session with a goodie bag of makeup samples and discount codes. The group were also told that there might be an opportunity to apply for work experience within their beauty business in the future.

The class had the chance to take part in a short Q&A at the end of the session to gain more insight into becoming a business owner in the industry.

Do you have any advice for starting our careers?

  • Believe in yourself.
  • Journal to record all of your ideas.
  • Use social media. Take photos and use Canva to make them look professional. When it looks professional, people will believe in you and buy into what you are doing.
  • To-do lists.
  • Direct message us on Instagram and we will try and guide you as much as possible with any questions you have. We want to help everyone; we are more powerful together.

Why did you decide you become a business owner, instead of working for someone else?

We started with just makeup brushes and then from there it just started to happen. Plus, you can earn whatever you want to earn, there’s no limit, so for me, that was a selling point.

You don’t get bossed about, you are your own boss and run everything. It’s hard because you have to do everything yourself but it’s so worth it.

How much money do I need to start a business?

We started with £100. Write down exactly what you want to do. So if it’s a shop, start researching and writing everything down so you know how much money you will need.
