Arts Festival 2021 – Joel Ford – ‘The Interaction between our Landscapes and Architecture’ 2021

As part of our Arts Festival 2021 we are shining a spotlight on some of the work of our many talented art and design students. We’ll take a look at the inspiration for their submissions and how they created the pieces exhibited.

Today, we take a look at the work of Joel Ford. He studied on a BTEC Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art, Design and Media Practice.

Joel Ford

He chose to work on a project linked to the subject he was going on to study at university. His project is called ‘The Interaction between our Landscapes and Architecture’ 2021.

He said:

“I decided to observe and look at local environments around me. I particularly liked getting out into the Peak District to take photos. I wanted to investigate the relationship between architecture and the environment it is situated in, the idea of function vs aesthetics and the balance between the natural world and our manmade structures. In the exhibition there are a series of photographs of my final piece – which is a freestanding structure/model made from 6-string coloured threads, calico, wire, florist’s wire string and zip ties. The model is placed in front of a series of my own photography – backed onto card stands.

I took great inspiration from the works of Thomas Heatherwick and Norman Foster. I also enjoyed the wire workshops – which ultimately swayed me when making my mind up on what material(s) to use for my final piece.”

Progression

Joel will be going to study a BA (Hons) in Landscape Architecture at the University of Sheffield in the Autumn.
