Wesley Marchant plans to build a career around teaching and supporting children with BSL

Wesley Marchant, Health and Social Care Level 2 student spoke to us about his experience on the course as a BSL student. He has felt supported by the staff and his communications support worker. This has inspired Wesley to want to help other students at school and strive for a career as a speech therapist or communications support worker.

Wesley - health and social care student

“I chose Health and Social Care as it was the right direction for me to go down to become a speech and language therapist or a communications support worker to support deaf children.

It’s really important to me to teach more people BSL.

I have enjoyed the whole course. The thing I enjoyed the most was teaching my class the alphabet in British Sign Language. I taught two groups together and everyone did brilliantly. This is what made me want to teach more people around the college. I will be teaching staff and students BSL next week. It will be great to help support students and peers and allow them to communicate with them. This will help with my development and jobs after college. It’s really important to me to teach more people BSL. Not only will it build my confidence but I will feel happy knowing that more staff know a little bit of British Sign Language. I will feel more understood too.

I also want to get my BSL level 3 qualification to help me gain more job opportunities.

This is a one-year course but I am hoping to do my level 3 next year or move onto an apprenticeship. I am yet to decide. I am aiming for the two jobs I mentioned that will lead to university. I also want to get my BSL level 3 qualification to help me gain more job opportunities.

All the tutors are really nice. They have been supporting me with a communication support worker in my class. They allow me to acknowledge everything that the teachers are saying.”
