If you enjoy, practical, hands on learning this is the course for you. You will learn all the basics for fabrication and welding.

You will have use of your fabrication workshop where you will use welding techniques to fuse metals together.

You will be learning from industry recognised tutors with experience and excellent fabrication and welding knowledge and understanding. Throughout the course there are various ways of getting your foot on to the ladder of a career out in industry, be that through work experience, industry placement or an apprenticeship. Tutors and career specialist staff at college will help you prepare for that next step throughout the course.

Additional information: PPE is required in the form of Flame retardant overalls and steel toe capped boots. We link with PPE suppliers and can help to get you kitted out at the start of your course if you don’t have these – bursaries (help to cover the cost of these materials) are available.

Course Structure

During this course you will learn modules such as:

  • Metal Active Gas Welding – (Overhead) Low Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel or Aluminium
  • Advanced Fabrication Processes – Plate (3mm and Above in Thickness)
  • Advanced Fabrication Processes – Sheet Metal (Below 3mm in Thickness)

This course requires the production of 2 welds in the overhead position and these must be completed in either MAGS, MMA or TAGS welding processes. The completed welds will be visually and destructive tested to aid you in understanding of what is required to produce a good weld.

The fabrications for both courses cover a platework unit (3mm and above) and a sheet metal unit (3mm and below). You are issued with engineering drawings to work from and only the complexity of the fabrications increases with course level.

The practical work for this course is graded by pass, merit or distinction.
